When you apply makeup, it sits on top of the skin, making you feel confident in how you look. So, it’s stands to reason then that wouldn’t need a mineral face sunscreen as well, right? The issue that makeup has is that the SPF protection it offers is fairly minimal.

Even though some makeup products clearly display ‘SPF’ on the packaging, they don’t come close to what a good mineral sunscreen will. So, in every sense, you need to use a sunscreen product as well.

When Do You Apply Mineral Face Sunscreen?

Ok, so when wearing makeup, the right order is to apply your sunscreen after your makeup – as you would with a moisturizer. As with non-makeup wearers, it also needs to be reapplied every couple of hours if you’re staying out in the sun.

Essentially, makeup is something that is designed to make you look better, but if you neglect sun protection, you risk developing the signs of ageing that include fine lines and wrinkles.

Difference Between Mineral & Chemical Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens are generally considered better for the skin, but why is that? Well, it’s down to their composition in that they sit on the skin’s surface, rather than having to be absorbed.

The issue with chemical sunscreens is that they can contain irritants that do nothing to support your skin’s health. Mineral sunscreen never enters the body and, as such, can’t affect the skin – other than in positive ways. What’s more, these chemicals can make their way into the bloodstream.

Mineral products are created from compounds that exist in nature and simply create a barrier and so wash off afterwards, leaving the skin pretty much as it was before application. Chemical brands, however, require heat and absorption.

Skincare Should Also Come Before Sunscreen

Something else that should be applied before your sunscreen are the products you use as part of your skincare regime. So, if you use serums, toners, moisturizers and cleansers, they should be used before you go anywhere near your sunscreen.

When you pair together a good moisturizer and sunscreen on a daily basis, you get the perfect combination to support your skin’s health.

Here are some other things to think about when applying your sunscreen:

  • Wear a mineral face sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 in order to get the best amount of protection from the sun’s UV rays
  • Your sunscreen can be applied over makeup within just a few minutes.
  • A product that has broad-spectrum coverage is something you need to aim for, otherwise, you won’t be protected against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Reapplication is something that you need to really focus on when you’re out in the sun for more than a few hours. If you find yourself sweating, that frequency should be even higher.

Mineral Face Sunscreen Is a Skin Routine Essential

What you need to do is start thinking of your mineral sunscreen as being a product that belongs very much in the category of a skin routine essential. It’s long been thought of only in the context of visits to the beach, but it really should be in your thinking every day.

So, make sure you have some on your makeup dresser for use during your own makeup routine. That way, you get the reassurance of knowing your skin is safe.
